The 26-year-old defensive midfielder becomes the second visa player on the Wanderers' books, joining the club after a break-out season with Uruguayan club Cerro where he guided them to a third-place finish, the club's best result in seven years.

Pinatares' arrival at the Wanderers follows a recent trip to South America by the club's hierarchy where it's understood the purpose was to scout several players. Despite his relatively young age, the technically gifted and hard-working midfielder spent nine years playing in the top two divisions in Uruguay and Brazil with spells at Portuguesa (Brazil), Boston River and Rentistas (both in Uruguay) before joining Cerro in 2015.

Pinatares possesses an impressive passing range balanced by a strong defensive nous and represented Uruguay's youth national team in his mid teens. He will link-up with his new team on July 11 and will battle Dimas Delgado, Steven Lustica and Kearyn Baccus for a spot in the starting line-up.

Pinatares replaces midfielder Jacob Pepper whose departure was announced on Wednesday.

"Jacob was a popular figure around the club and leaves with our best wishes," Wanderers chief executive John Tsatsimas said.

Meanwhile, fringe Socceroo Josh Brillante is set to return to the A-League, with Sydney FC deep in discussions to sign the player for next season pending a release from Italian Serie A side Fiorentina.

The Sky Blues are hoping to make the 23-year-old a permanent addition to their squad where, despite his ability to play in defence, they view him as a long-term solution to their midfield.

Fairfax Media understands Sydney have agreed personal terms with Brillante, who is set to end his two-year spell in Italy.

Despite having a year to remain on his contract with Fiorentina, sources suggest an agreement has been arranged allowing Brillante to seal a move to Sydney on a free transfer. Clauses will likely be included in the deal giving Fiorentina a share of any potential on-sale transfer revenue in the future.

The agreement will free-up the wage bill for Fiorentina and allow Sydney FC to sign Brillante under the salary cap where he will challenge Milos Dimitrijevic and Brandon O'Neill for a starting position in their midfield. Brillante will finalise the terms of his release in Italy and pending the outcome, will likely arrive in Sydney by next week to sign with the Sky Blues.

The versatile player made two Serie A appearances with the Florence club before being loaned to Empoli and Serie B club Como.

Previously, Brillante spent four seasons in the A-League with the Newcastle Jets and the now defunct Gold Coast United.

He has made five appearances for the Socceroos.
