We asked Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten to both write 500 word apiece to appeal to the hearts and mind of the people of this region.
Their pieces can be read in this edition of the Illawarra Mercury on pages eight and nine or online at www.illawarramercury.com.au.
Mr Shorten speaks strongly about the Illawarra.
“Every time I visit the Illawarra I am blown away by the sheer beauty of the region and the hardworking and resilient nature of its people,’’ he said.
“As I have travelled throughout the region it is clear that the Illawarra’s economic journey mirrors the nation’s journey.
“From an economy driven by the resources boom to a more diverse and vibrant economy focused on skills, advanced manufacturing and tourism.”
Mr Turnbull’s piece is strongly focussed around the Coalition-held seat of Gilmore and was themed around the mantra of “jobs and growth”.
“We know that the economy is people - their lives, their futures, their security,’’ he said.
“A strong economy is one where businesses are confident of the future and are prepared to take the risk of investing, expanding and hiring. Our business tax cuts encourage small and medium businesses to do just that.”

DRAWING THE ACE
It was a draw soccer fans of the Illawarra could only dream about.
The Wollongong Wolves have drawn A-League heavyweights Sydney FC in the FFA Cup round of 32.
It will see the Wolves host Sydney FC in Wollongong in a knockout contest between July 26 and August 10.
It will be a terrific opportunity for local footy fans to vote with their feet.
It comes as a crucial time as the city again makes the case for A-League representation.
The announcement also follows the region throwing its hat in the ring for a game between Sydney FC and Melbourne FC which is yet to find a home.
This is a great chance to show football’s supremos just what the “world game” means to Wollongong.
