She was left for dead beside the Princes Hwy on Friday the 13th of May, then underwent two surgeries to put her badly damaged body back together.
But that was weeks ago.
Friday, it seems, has put all that behind her.
The Mercury found the little cat in a frisky mood on Friday, having made a full return to health and a happy new home in Cordeaux Heights. Mauricio Quijano, 29, adopted 11-week-old Friday after a chance encounter via the Mercury.
“I came across her [story] in the paper,” he said. “My friend left it open on the page with Friday on it. I ended up reading it and thought, I’ve got to have her.”
Friday now shares a home with Mr Quijano’s two other cats and two dogs.
She is the household’s smallest and most confident resident.
“That’s what struck me: when she arrived she wasn’t looking for a corner, she wasn’t freaking out; she was pretty calm,” Mr Quijano said. “She spent most of the time in my hands and sleeping, then she just took to the place, looking around.”
Friday was brought back to life at Dapto’s Companion Animal Vet and cared for by the Wollongong Animal Rescue Network.
She is a welcome distraction for Mr Quijano, who fractured several bones at the weekend during a mountain biking mishap.
In hospital, tired of the rigmarole and cursing his own bad luck, he found himself thinking of the little cat that now waited at home.
“I’m so glad she ended up here,” he said.
