While Wollongong Flowers does have many pre-made arrangements a wall of flowers is waiting for those who want to inspect the range and variety before deciding what they want.
Walking into the shopfront is like entering an art school where starting each arrangement is like working on a blank canvas with a myriad of styles and colours to choose from.
The business also shows and sells the work of local artists and runs floral arrangement workshops that are similar to an art class. The next one is on Saturday July 30.
Wollongong Flowers is run by siblings Paul and Chris Briscoe-Hough who want to share the art of floral arrangement with the community. “It is for everyone who enjoys flowers. It is also for those like to meet people or want to do something relaxing with friends. There is such a variety of people who like flowers. It is open for anyone,” Mrs Briscoe-Hough said.
Walk into the Corrimal Street store and it is like a creative space with a feel good atmosphere. Everyone seems to relax and no one seems to be in a hurry.
Mrs Briscoe-Hough’s brother has 25 years experience as a buyer at the flower markets while his sister has made the move from the community services sector. “He tends to get good stock because he knows everyone”.

She said there were more flowers around now and they source both locally grown flowers and others from overseas countries such as France.
“We have got some really food florists who work here and we like them to use their own creativity and their own style. We also like to have our own style for the shop. We also like to give people better value. We also cater for people who want to come in and pick something that is ready to go,” she said.
Some people who make cakes for weddings and functions come in to buy individual flowers specifically for a cake. Others want to select a variety of flowers and make a personal arrangement for someone themselves. But most people choose what they want a professional florist made up for them. Mrs Briscoe-Hough said she had always been into art and creative things so it was a natural progression for her to run a shop that also promoted local art.
