A fond memory of the 2000 Sydney Olympics were the friendly volunteers in blue jackets helping visitors. A similar concept is being run by Destination Wollongong and IRT to help passengers on Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas when they disembark at Port Kembla on October 30.

The ambassadors will greet visitors with information and opportunities. They will be highly visible in jackets making them easily identifiable as a roaming source of information. They will engage visitors by sharing stories of the city and its development and showcasing the pride and passion they have for the region. Applications close on September 2 at cruise@wollongong.nsw.gov.au or at Wollongong Visitors Centre and training will be provided.
IRT Communities chief executive Stig Andersen said the idea was the result of a discussion with Destination Wollongong. Applications are not restricted to IRT Lifestyle customers but Mr Andersen believes many have the local knowledge, passion and commitment to make a great first impression.
Destination Wollongong’s Mark Sleigh said 500 volunteers were sought for the Wollongong Ambassador Program.
Mr Sleigh said when Radiance of the Seas berthed on its maiden visit to Port Kembla it would mark the start of a new era of tourism opportunities for the region.
“We are determined to show people what the Illawarra and South Coast is all about. We know our beaches and harbour are spectacular, our city centre is alive with small bars, diverse eateries and boutique shops, and there is an array of fun activities people can take part in but we also know that it is the people of the region who can help us stand out. Our ambassadors will be able to guide them and provide the information they need,” Mr Sleigh said.
Destination Wollongong chair Tania Brown said by everyone working together there was a chance to make the visit unforgettable for the first cruise ship visits.
