GONE TO THE DOGS
To say I'm disappointed in Anna Watson's support of the greyhound racing industry is an understatement (Illawarra Mercury, July 12, 2016).

Until now, I had always found Anna to be supportive of animal welfare issues. However, she has either not read Justice McHugh's report or has chosen to cherry pick parts of it to suit the ALP agenda on this issue.
Anna wrote that tens of thousands of greyhounds will be destroyed as a result of the industry shutdown. Yet the report states that there are currently only 6, 809 registered greyhounds and 10, 253 juveniles not yet registered, so it's difficult to see how “tens of thousands” can be destroyed.
Also, the Premier has promised to work with the industry and with shelters to form a plan over the next six months to address the issue of rehoming the current dogs. And while it is true that some dogs may euthanised, that will be an end to it as the breeders stop breeding more dogs.
If we don't change the industry, they will continue to kill up to 7000 dogs per year. Even if the other 79 recommendations of the inquiry were implemented, there would still be a minimum of 2000 to 4000 dogs slaughtered each year, year after year. So if we're concerned about the number of dogs killed, the best option is to completely ban the industry.

TAKING A TOLL
Premier Mike Baird is running the state like a corporate boardroom – Tea Party politics.
The WestConnex is a typical example. WCX M4 Pty Ltd will be responsible for design, building and maintaining the motorway. Sydney Motorway Corporation Pty Ltd (the parent company) will collect tolls.
Even though it may only take five or six years to build, Sydney Motorways Corporation, has a licence to collect tolls for 43 years.
Toll road companies are expected to make billions of dollars for investors— including governments. What is the government’s involvement? The government is responsible for setting toll fees not only for the WCX but any other road within the state.
With this in mind the Princes Highway has had a name change— the Princes Motorway. Seems ominous doesn’t it? The Baird government can set a toll on any section of the motorway between Sydney and the Victorian border.
“Click, click”; a ten dollar toll between Berry and Nowra with no way to avoid it. Well there is always public transport – oh I forgot there isn’t any.

RACE TO THE BOTTOM
Some commercial television stations apparently consider the average viewer has the attention span of a fruit fly. Channel 7’s Sunrise programme on a daily basis, constantly regales its viewers with absolutely mundane information about the romps of a parasitical UK family, the Windsors.
In more recent times, Channel 9 – in promoting the cause of Pauline Hanson - has beaten Channel 7 in a race to the bottom in terms of journalistic relevance, and in the process; insulted the reputation of Nelson Mandela.
Channel 9’s Today program recently featured a logo with Pauline Hanson’s photo and a text saying: “They tried to put her in jail like Nelson Mandela, but she came back- and came back stronger”.
Any attempt to compare Pauline Hanson favourably with Nelson Mandela not only ignores the very obvious character differences between them but also, insults the memory we hold of one of the world’s most remarkable individuals, Nelson Mandela.
Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in jail for fighting to obtain equality and justice for all South Africans. Pauline Hanson served three months for alleged electoral fraud. Mandela went on to unite his country. Pauline Hanson has constantly fomented religious and xenophobia division across Australia.
