His family had been told in June he would potentially have six months to live after a rare form of rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of brain cancer spread throughout his body. Instead, he got three weeks.

The Ulladulla family made the decision not to tell Kieren about the extent of his cancer based on advice from doctors.

Last Friday, Kieren told them angels had been to visit him.

“We didn’t have to tell him he was dying,” said Kieren’s dad, Warren Thomas-Thompson.

“He knew he wouldn’t be here a long time. He was worried about his mum.”

Kieren began to have seizures on Saturday at lunchtime and never fully regained consciousness although he was still responsive.

On Sunday at 11.50am he took his final breath with Warren holding him and his older brother Bradley holding his hand.

The family is hoping to bury Kieren near his brother Brendan, who also died from another illness at the age of eight in 2004. 

“He wanted to be buried near his brother,” Warren said.

Cronulla Sharks and NSW State of Origin player Paul Gallen has paid tribute to Kieren on social media. 

Kieren’s greatest wish had been to see his name on Gallen’s wrist and in the third State of Origin game the rugby league star made it happen.

He has also vowed to keep Kieren’s name on his wrist for the rest of the season.

“He loved the Cronulla Sharks,” Warren said.

“The whole time he has been sick he has not been out of his Sharks gear.

“Paul rang us three or four times after Kieren died to check and see if we were okay.”

Kieren's funeral will be held on Thursday, July 21 at 2pm. It will be held at Chapel of White Lady, White Lady Funeral Home at 402 Pennant Hills Road, Pennant Hills.

The burial will take place at Castle Hill cemetery at Gilbert Road, Castle Hill at approximately 3.15pm after the service.  Anyone is welcome to pay their respects.

The family has asked if possible, you wear NRL attire as Kieren was a huge rugby league fan.

“He was such a lovely, bubbly and outgoing boy,” Warren said.

“He didn’t like suits or anything like that.”
