A lone yachtsman was this morning rescued off the coast of Wollongong after his vessel capsized.
The 44-year-old Queensland man was found about 270 nautical miles (500km) east of Wollongong about 3.45am today by NSW Water Police.
About 8.15am yesterday, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority received notification that an emergency beacon had been activated.
A search and rescue operation, which included the help of commercial aircraft from Air Canada and Air New Zealand, was launched.
The aircrafts, each en-route to Sydney, flew over the remote area of the ocean where the man was stranded to ensure it was indeed a capsized yacht.
The 44-year-old left from Pittwater, on Sydney’s northern beaches, two weeks ago and was on his way to the South Coast town of Eden on the 11-metre yacht called Streaker.
The man was rescued by officers on board the police launch Nemesis and has been taken to Sydney.
He was reportedly in good spirits and did not have any injuries.
