Traffic through the suburb has been an issue since the Memorial Drive extension was completed, which deposited large volumes of traffic onto the Princes Highway.

The key area of concern is the 1.1-kilometre stretch of the Princes Highway from Hospital Road to Bulli Public School.

That stretch boasts six traffic lights, as well as the roundabout used by vehicles entering Memorial Drive.

In peak periods and on weekends traffic slows to a crawl along much of this route.

The most recent set of lights was added in November last year. as part of the Woolworths development.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesman said they were aware the Woolworths supermarket and other stores would create a substantial increase in traffic.

“A traffic study carried out for the development application showed traffic would increase by around 30 per cent,” the spokesman said.

He said the option of making a right turn from the highway was eliminated to minimise effects to northbound traffic.

However, the spokesman said RMS was aware of the issue of traffic in the Bulli area.

“A traffic study for the Princes Highway through Bulli is under way and will not be completed until October to ensure all future options are identified to manage traffic flow in the area,” the spokesman said.

“Roads and Maritime is continuing to work closely with Wollongong City Council to progress the study.”

A spokesman from Wollongong City Council said the effect the Woolworths development would have on traffic was considered as part of the development consent process.

“The traffic impact report considered the traffic generation from the proposal,” the council spokesman said.

“As part of the assessment it was considered that traffic generation would be suitably catered for by the proposal and managed by the conditions of consent including those provided by the then Roads and Traffic Authority with regard to works.”

These works included the installation of traffic lights at the developer’s expense and restrictions to Molloy Street.
