With the perfect sea conditions, it seemed like half the east coast boats headed wide, with Illawarra and South Coast anglers joining the fleet in the hunt for these elusive fish.
Reports were good heading into the weekend, with southern blue fin, yellowfin and albacore out there for the taking from way down to Bermagui all the way to deep ocean hot spots off Sydney.
There are far too many terrific captures to mention them all but direct east of Shellharbour and Wollongong was the red zone.
There was a queue at Shellharbour ramp to use the gantry and the best fish by sundown last Saturday was a 120-kilogram brute for Mike Perabo from Helensburgh.
Most of the fish into Shellharbour were southern blues from 50kg upwards, but most of the northern fish were mostly yellowfin in the jelly bean size from 5-10 kilos.
However, there was one thumper yellowfin weighing in just under 90 kilograms.
The mid-week weather gave anglers time to re-rig and set their gear up for another shot this weekend, but Sunday is looking sad.
Closer in, were more reports of big snapper hooked but not landed over last weekend and earlier this week. Most of the big bust ups came from the afternoon bite from sundown till dark and were hooked on soft plastics in either white or camo colours.
Those on the anchor found better numbers but smaller sizes to about 2kg. Cuttlefish were still seen popping.
Off the rocks drummer, luderick and bream fishing was nothing short of sensational with some big fish in big numbers hiding in the washes. Royal red prawns and or cunje with a steady trail of soaked bread and pellets proved the successful recipe to secure a tasty feed of bread and butter fish.
Off the beaches everyone has been asking where the mulloway are, as very fish have been caught but bream and whiting have been taken on worms and pipis in good numbers.
