That said, the Campbelltown-based business, is not exactly new to the brewing world though.
Stockade is the craft beer label for BrewPack, a company that contract brews for other labels.
So if you have a beer but not a physical brewery, or lack capacity, or are based on the other side of the country and want to avoid the expense of shipping bottles or cans of beer right across Australia, you get a contract brewer to make it for you.
Once frowned upon, the practice has become more accepted in recent years. As it should – there’s really nothing wrong with it.
Besides, there’s a good chance you’ve drunk a craft beer made at BrewPack without even knowing it.
Though you probably shouldn’t worry too much about that – as Brewpack’s Stockade range shows, the brewers on the job there really know what they’re doing.
I’ve been quite impressed with several of their beers. Duel, a hoppy lager, is undoubtedly going to go down well when the weather gets warmer.
Then there's Hopzilla – a beer that expertly melds an IPA with a hefweizen. And Dark Angel, which is described as a chili mocha pale stout. Yep, a stout that is pale.
They're both great, too. As is the 8bit IPA, which comes with a wonderful retro video-game style label (which you can see above).
It’s a West Coast IPA, so there’s stacks of resiny and fruity aromas, paired with a decent whack of bitterness on the tongue. It’s really juicy and refreshing.
As for finding this and the other Stockade beers, last time I checked Cellarbrations at Warilla had some of their beers in stock – and I have seen them on tap at His Boy Elroy too.
