Last week NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli announced a range of sweeping reforms to the HSC, including the need for students to demonstrate they’ve met a minimum standard in literacy and numeracy to receive the HSC from 2020. The reform means students as young as Year 9 must achieve a minimum band 8 in NAPLAN, to receive their HSC three years later.
NSW Teachers Federation acting president, Gary Zadkovich said while he welcomed the changes, achieving the literacy and numeracy standards would require the federal government to fully honour promised Gonski funding. "It's one thing to set higher literacy and numeracy standards; it's another to ensure schools and students are funded to the extent they need to meet the standards," he said.
