They were part of nine projects commissioned by Wollongong City Council as part of their committment to creating opportunites for local artists through the Bellambi Placemaking Project.

Anita Larkin was one of the commissioned artists who worked with around 140 adults and children to create a giant mosaic sculpture.

“Working on community art projects is incredibly enrching to peoples lives … as it gives a visual presence to peoples stories,” Ms Larkin said.

The works were designed and created in consultation with Aboriginal and community groups, playgroups, schools and volunteers, and  celebrate the stories and community spirit of the area.

Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said creating artworks that celebrate local identity and encourage a strong sense of ownership and sense of place are an important priority for Wollongong City Council.

“Council is committed to ensuring that Wollongong is a healthy community in a liveable city,” he said.

“We want our community spaces to reflect the cultural diversity and sensitivities of those who live here.”

Four more artworks will be launched on Thursday 28 July at Bellambi Surf Life Saving Club that celebrate Bellambi residents’ strong connection to the coast.
