School captain Denali Hutt may be busy preparing for the HSC but The Illawarra Grammar School (TIGS) Year 12 student is already enjoying the accolades of a big achievement.

It comes after Ms Hutt was recognised on International Women's Day in March with the Zonta Club of Wollongong’s annual Young Women in Public Affairs Award. showcasing emerging young leaders making a difference, But never has someone from the region or zone been recognised at the international level.
At TIGS school assembly on Tuesday it was announced that Ms Hutt was not only the winner of the Zonta District 24 award which includes all of NSW and the ACT. Her application was sent to the United States where she was chosen as one of 10 international winners from a field of young women from 32 districts and 20 countries.
Ms Hutt, 17, plans to study medicine or veterinary science. She is also passionate about helping others and volunteering for community organisations such as the Salvation Army and her local legacy club. She helps disadvantaged children access education resources and loving homes through CareSouth and has provided guidance and assistance for those with a disability at Sony Camp and the Disability Trust tennis and netball programs. She is also involved with the World Vision Global Leaders Forum, Model United Nations and the World Parks Congress. She has achieved her Gold Duke of Edinburgh and participated in a week long immersion in a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory.

At the assembly Zonta Wollongong’s Sheldri Weston and Grace Freckelton announced how she was being internationally recognised as a young woman who has shown a strong commitment to volunteering, leadership and dedication to empowering women worldwide.
As a member of the regional judging panel Ms Freckelton said she was captivated by Ms Hutt’s passion for helping local disadvantaged children access education resources and loving homes and providing guidance and assistance to those with a disability.
Ms Hutt thanked the Zonta for providing her with the opportunity and to Mrs Weston and Ms Freckelton for supporting her through the whole process. “It is very surprising but extremely rewarding. I would strongly encourage any younger girls who are interested in very prominent world issues to apply because it truly is an amazing opportunity”.
