Rikki lost his seven year battle with multiple myeloma on Tuesday afternoon.
Jane Organ said her husband died peacefully at home surrounded by family.
Afterwards she found a five page letter from him expressing what he wanted for his funeral.
The main message was that he does not want anyone to come wearing all black.
This is what he asked Mrs Organ to share about his funeral on Monday at 2pm at The Builders (Master Builders Club) where he worked so much in recent years.
“These are Rikki’s words. We have dressed him in his Johnny O’Keefe outfit. And it is a celebration of his life,” Jane said.
Rikki’s words
- “All guests are to be dressed in bright, beautiful, outlandish colours. Anybody in black will be asked to leave,” Rikki Organ.
In lieu of flowers, Rikki requested donations be made for multiple myeloma. Envelopes will be provided at the door.
Rikki’s wish comes as messages continue to pour in from all over Australia from people describing the multi MO Award winner as a wonderful man with a beautiful soul and bright colourful personality.
Scott Radburn said his little mate did so much without ever seeking attention and helped more people than anyone will ever know. “That was his legacy. He just wanted people to have a great life and he just wanted to help them”. Graham Wilson has been in hospital with brain cancer for 16 months and spoke of the great support his friend had been despite his own battle with cancer. Rikki helped Radburn emcee a fundraiser for Wilson and visited the man who gave him guitar lessons 30 years ago whenever he could. “He was a natural entertainer who was fun to be with. When he put on a show he was there to entertain and gave it everything he had,” Wilson said.
Bev Thurling said Rikki and Jane Organ became wonderful friends of her and her late husband Greg while he and Rikki both battled cancer. “Rikki and Greg were a constant strength for each other and Rikki was a kind and colorful character who could always made people smile. Rikki will be forever in our hearts.”
Leukaemia Foundation regional manager Nina Field said Rikki was a dear friend of the charity who together with the late Greg Thurling made great things happen.
“Rikki's brilliant entertainment and compering made the Leukaemia Foundation Golf Tournaments truly memorable days”.
Robert Specogna, of Centro CBD, provided the venue for the Rikki Organ fundraiser in late 2014 but recalled much earlier memories about his mate who he described as a great entertainer.
“We were in a band called 'East' and we played in the Illawarra area four to five times a week, mostly the Illawarra Yacht Club. He always gave 100 per cent performance for his audience. Rikki showed so much life on stage and in life,” he said.
ClubsNSW chairman and former Illawarra Mercury general manager Peter Newell wrote a tribute Rikki describing the former Happy Harry as a true gentleman with a happy and infectious personality and a rock of support to his mates.
Entertainer Scott McRae said “any time you got to share the stage with Rikki you had to bring your A Game. Great performer. Great individual”.
And Trent Bowater wrote the following personal message about a great mentor and inspiration for his own career.
“You nursed me as a baby, you nurtured me as a child. You inspired me to entertain. You always made me smile. I was always so proud to say I knew you. And even prouder that you called me your friend. Thank you for letting me be a part of your life. If I could be half the man you were, I’d still be taller than you. I know you’d like that gag my dear friend. I love you”.
Tribute from former Illawarra Mercury general manager Peter Newell and present ClubsNSW chairman Peter Newell.
The NSW club entertainment industry is in mourning, and so am I.
We have lost a great friend and supporter with the sad passing of Rikki Organ.
Rikki was known to clubs across the length and breadth of NSW. No fewer than 10 MO entertainment industry awards adorned his shelves, and he was known and loved far and wide.
His happy personality was infectious, and he was the epitome of that old tag about being “Nature’s Gentleman”.
Apart from being an entertainer of superb talent, Rikki also was as solid as a rock, prepared to publicly stand alongside his entertainer colleagues and the wider club industry when certain forces threatened its very existence.
I have known Rikki Organ, his brothers and family for more than 46 years and am proud to have called him my friend.
His late father Kevin was an Illawarra Mercury subeditor when I joined the newspaper in 1970 and who, like his talented son, also was Nature’s Gentleman.
His mother, Doreen, occasionally answered the call at their Woonona home to look after Judy and my first two children, Karen and Steven, when they were pre-schoolers if I had been caught at work.
Rikki starred as The Mercury’s Happy Harry summer holiday host, touring caravan parks and recreation spots distributing goodies to tourists and locals alike in return for the infamous “Mercury coupon”. (This was a great PR campaign devised by former editor the late John Richardson, with the added advantage of supporting Mercury sales when some regular readers left the district for the summer school holidays).
Rikki followed such Happy Harry luminaries as the late Peter Cullen and Bob Quintrell, Tim Mullins, and dare I say, yours truly, while Scott Radburn, of Four Kinsmen fame, also occupied the Harry chair.
Luckily Rikki was not as unfortunate as Quintrell in the job. Having just refuelled a big V8 Superoo Falcon donated by (then) Byrt Ford for the campaign (a Happy Harry perk I might add), Bob drove it into the Crown Central carpark late one afternoon, mounted a concrete barrier, ruptured and fuel tank and caused a near disaster.
It was before Rikki’s time, but he would have seen the humour in it, despite the near calamity which one spark would have caused.
I know Rikki has put up a valiant fight against the blood cancer multiple myeloma, and I know first-hand he would have received no better care than that afforded him by the dedicated medical team by his side.
RIP Rikki Organ – sadly, another good person gone.
Tribute from fellow entertainer, former Happy Harry and member of the Four Kinsmen Scott Radburn.
I have had the pleasure and honour of knowing Rikki Organ since the early 70s.
He was a little guy physically but he was a huge guy with his generosity and his love for all people from all walks of life. He just loved everyone.
When people were donating items for Rikki’s fundraiser to help him with all his treatment which was costing a fortune..the one thing I didn’t realise was the generosity and the amount of time he spent helping people.
He never told anyone about it. He just did it. He never wanted anyone to thank him. He never wanted anything in return. He didn’t want money for it. He just wanted to help.
That was his legacy. He just wanted people to have a great life and he just wanted to help them.
Very recently I looked up the definition of organ in a well known dictionary and the meaning states it is a part of an organism which is typically self contained and has a specific vital function.
And Rikki’s vital function was to make people feel wonderful and have a brilliant time enjoying his performances.
Love him we did. We adored him.
I will really miss him. It was an honour to have him as a friend.
He is my little mate but he is my huge mate because of the generosity and love he gave out to all people in abundance.
The ultimate Entertainer & the ultimate all round good guy. Phil Nixon, Albion Park
