Greg Barea joined Tim and Jackson Smith on Sunday, venturing wide to chase either the tuna or the numerous sharks following the migrating tuna schools.
Earlier in morning, Barea and Smith tagged mako sharks and then after watching and learning from the old guys, it was Jacko’s turn as a sizable blue shark took his bait.
As it turned out, this blue was not happy and fought as hard as other shark species.
He put the hurt on Jackson for over three hours before they secured it alongside the boat.
Jackson is now awaiting on confirmation a pending Australian record for his 135.5kg shark on 15kg in the ‘small fry’ division and possibly a potential world record.
Zero tuna was reported as radio chatter, out there indicated they have pushed further offshore but were still being hammered by the commercial long liners.
Luke from Leisure Coast Tackle at Corrimal said heaps of crews took full advantage of last weekend’s weather and headed out wide to see if the bluefin were still about.
Back inshore, there were some excellent reddie caught over the weekend with a lot of the better fish coming from the 50-70 metre depth line where larger plastics and cuttlefish proved to be the better baits. The largest fish weighed on the shop scales was 4.5kgs but there were heaps around the 3kg mark.
Flathead drifts again fired last weekend with little current making it a tad easier to hold bottom on the deeper drifts and the fish were averaging around the 55cm mark and were in very good condition.
There were a couple of big kingfish caught last weekend also with quite a few of them coming from wider marks such as Bandit and Wollongong reefs as well as around the islands off Port Kembla.
Beaches and rocks still continue to fish well for a wide variety of species with bream and drummer still about in good numbers and the drummer are absolute horses at the moment.
There have been some excellent whiting taking squirt worms and beach worms joined by winter big bream and oversized trevally.
