Wollongong Police are investigating the suspicious fire at the Sovereign Inn on the Princes Highway which saw other guests being forced to leave their rooms.
The fire started at 8.30pm on Tuesday and NSW Fire and Rescue Inspector John Hawes said it was “quickly knocked out”.
“There were seven people evacuated from the adjoining rooms just for safety reasons but at no stage were they in any harm,” Insp Hawes said.
No one was in the room when emergency crews arrived, but Insp Hawes said it had been “trashed”.
He also said fire crews immediately had concerns about how the fire started.
“Fire officers went in and put out the fire but due to the fact there were a few different points of origin where the fire started it was deemed suspicious and handed to police,” he said.
