The 2010 premiership-winner hasn’t played since undergoing routine surgery on his troublesome left knee following his side’s 8-6 win over South Sydney in round three.
It was supposed to keep him out of action for just three weeks but a subsequent infection in the joint required a second round of surgery and has prevented him from making it back onto the paddock this year.
After talking with medical staff and his family, Creagh is confident he’s made the the right call.
“I spoke to the players this morning and that was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do,” Creagh said.
“I have loved my time playing for the Dragons but unfortunately my hand has been forced with the knee injury getting worse over the course of this season.
“It’s a pretty tough day for me making a decision about retirement but it’s the right thing to do given how my knee is. It has been hard decision to make with my heart willing me to continue playing for this great club but deep down I know this is the right decision to make.”
The decision to retire just four games short of good mate Ben Hornby’s all-time appearance record for the club draws the curtain on a marvelous career that’s in included 11 Origins for NSW, two Tests for Australia, a record four club player of the year gongs and the 2010 premiership.
“I’ve been very fortunate to play 270 games for this club over 13 years so I really can’t complain,” Creagh said.
“I’m sad my career as a rugby league player is over but I’ve got a lot of good memories. I was lucky to win a premiership with the club, I’ve been able to play some rep footy as well which was a goal of mine as a young player coming through.
“This time was always going to come. There’s life after footy to try something new, try something exciting and I’m looking forward to that.”
