His underwater photo of two fighting blue dragon sea slugs, “Glaucus Atlanticus”, was named winner of the Animal Behaviour category.
It’s the third time the UK expat has been a finalist in what he calls “the Oscar’s of Australasian wildlife photography”.
"I have always had an attraction to the water and the tricks it plays on light for as long as I can remember,” Smith said.
“Some of my earliest memories are of my brother and I snorkeling on family holidays to France and the Mediterranean Sea.”
Meantime Wollongong photographer William Patino was named runner-up in the Landscape category for his image of New Zealand’s Mount Avalanche, “Transcendence”.
Illawarra seascape photographer Warren Keelan was also among the finalists.
Winning photos will appear in the September-October 2016 issue of Australian Geographic and will be on exhibition at the Australian Museum in Sydney from August 19 to October 9.
