But funding cuts in recent times means the SCWC needs more funds to extend its internship program.
About 4000 students graduate with an Arts or Creative Arts degree each year from the University of Wollongong alone, but many young writers find that they lack the relevant experience needed to find work in the creative industry.
SCWC’s internship program has about a ‘’50 per cent’’ success rate in placing graduates into positions within their desired field but wants to improve these odds.
ARTS NSW, Wollongong City Council and project grants help but more financial support is needed.
“We need to raise $33,000 for technical equipment, to hire suitable work-spaces, and facilitate professional development seminars relevant to a Creative Arts-related career,’’ a spokeswoman said.
“These improvements will make a huge difference to the young writers and our meaningful literary program in the region. We need help to provide these graduates with a solid foundation and opportunity to build the transition from studies to a profession in the arts industry.’’
Sponsors and donors are needed. Donations as little $5 can be made through the Chuffed website (https://chuffed.org/project/create-a-future-for- young-writers#/supporters) or calling the centre on 4228 1021.
