McKeon produced an extraordinary swim, with a split of 1:45.63 – seven tenths faster than his individual personal best – in the 4x200m freestyle final, as Australia finished fourth, behind the United States, Great Britain and Japan. The 24-year-old also finished seventh in the 400m freestyle final and competed in the 200m.
After returning to the Illawarra, McKeon – who now trains in Brisbane – said the Commonwealth Games is a major goal and will consider chasing a third Olympics in four years.
“I’ll have a break and enjoy time at home,” he said.
“But I’m still pretty young, I’d be 28 by the time Tokyo is on, so it would be pretty cool to be at a third one.
“I’m not sure exactly what my plans are just yet, but the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast will be something I’ll aim at.”
