She had been lying in the bedroom next door, listening to his terrified pleas for mercy but his killer wasn’t moved. They were "weird" noises - "like someone getting killed", Belinda Van Krevel recalled.
But the 19-year-old did nothing. Instead she lay in bed with a two-year-old child listening as her father was hacked to death in the early hours of August 18, 2000.
Even when the noises stopped she didn’t go to check on him. She put her daughter the car and drove to Warilla Police Station.
Belinda’s friend Keith Schreiber, confessed to the crime and was jailed. She denied any involvement.
Schreiber was her brother Mark Valera’s best mate. The pair had planned to visit him in jail that day – where he was doing ‘’life’’ for the murders of former Wollongong Lord Mayor Frank Arkell and shopkeeper David O’Hearn.
But the visit didn’t go ahead. And that night would be Jack Van Krevel’s last. Schreiber entered the house through a window left open for him. Using weapons planted - a knife, tomahawk and fire poker - he killed Jack.
The attack was vicious and drawn out. His neck was almost severed, and blood was spattered over the ceiling and walls. In 2001, Van Krevel, then 22, pleaded guilty to soliciting Schreiber to murder her father as he slept in his home.
The Supreme Court was told Van Krevel had asked Schreiber to kill her father. Schreiber said he did not know if she was serious or not, but knew "she wanted him done". Later Van Krevel told him she believed her father was interfering with a family member. She told others she hated her father and wanted him dead.
Police alleged hate and greed had motivated Van Krevel to commit the crime. She knew she and her brother were the sole beneficiaries of her father's substantial estate.
Her mother, Elizabeth Carroll, gave evidence that following the murder Belinda had told her she had offered Schreiber $2000 to kill her father.
Van Krevel was jailed for six years. But her release in 2007 didn’t spell freedom from her murderous violent past. In 2014 she landed another jail sentence for repeatedly stabbing her partner Marshall Gould in their Sydney unit.
Psychologists' reports tendered in Sydney's District Court said Van Krevel had been physically and sexually abused by her father.
After being stabbed, the court heard Mr Gould called his father, saying "she has gone crazy. She thinks I'm Jack and she has stabbed me."
The court heard Mr Gould had tried to cover up Van Krevel's crime by telling police he had been mugged by three men.
But a subsequent search warrant at their apartment revealed large bloodstains and Van Krevel was eventually charged.
Upon her release this year she gave a television interview about her past and her loyalty to her murderous brother. ‘’I know my brother and I know he’s a good person,’’ she said.
