Four young boys jumped into Lake Illawarra in a bid to avoid police Sunday afternoon after they allegedly attempted to break into a nearby car.
The boys, aged between 10 and 13 years old, fled from police by swimming into the lake after the alleged break in attempt at Buena Vista Street in Lake Heights about 2.15pm.
Two of the boys returned to the shore following police officer’s requests, however, the remaining two boys allegedly refused to leave the water.
Police, with the help of a nearby yacht regatta, retrieved the boys about 45 minutes later.
All four boys were arrested.
A 13-year-old was charged over three outstanding warrants. He faced Campbelltown Children’s Court.
A 12-year-old was charged with custody of a knife in a public place, entering a vehicle without the consent of the owner, and resisting police. A 10-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy, who came out of the water when requested by police, did not face charges, Lake Illawarra police said.
