The volunteers from the not for profit organisation are too busy feeding 25 to 40 people each Friday night at Port Kembla Community Centre.
That’s why Citylife Community Initiatives’ inaugural fundraising Masquerade Ball will be held on Saturday, September 3.
The fun-filled night at City Beach Function Centre in Wollongong includes entertainment, games, silent auction, a two-course meal, drinks, canapes and dancing.
Southern Lights Vocal Academy show group will highlight the night’s entertainment.
Citylife Community Initiatives director Jill Whalan said the organisation existed to build the community and to empower people through its community programs.
‘’Our Masquerade Ball will enable us to continue to provide and to expand these services and programs and to partner with others to help build a positive and thriving local community,’’ she said.
Mrs Whalan said one of its key services was its community kitchen in Port Kembla.
‘’We provide a free meal every Friday evening to anywhere from 25 to 40 people. For many people this is the only meal they have until the next Monday,’’ she said.
‘’This has become a vital connection for many, especially those who may become disengaged from their own families or who are at risk of homelessness.
‘’We provide a nourishing meal in a safe and positive environment where food and connection with others are key to the sense of community that has developed on a Friday evening.
‘’One of the key things we’d like to do through the Masquerade Ball is raise a chunk of the money to help the [community kitchen] team to do more of what they’re doing.’’
Citylife also runs ADHD support groups and a program called ‘Being Me’, which helps children with ADHD discover their strengths.
This has become a vital connection for many, especially those who may become disengaged from their own families or who are at risk of homelessness.
