Spring is finally here so the fishing should be getting better. Dash Bowater at the Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler had a weekend session on Wagonga Inlet with fishing mate Hippie Carradus. Dash reports that Wagonga seems to be going through a seasonal change at present as some species that have been plentiful throughout the winter months such as trevally and salmon seem to be slowly moving on making way for the others that prefer the warmer water, such as flathead, yellowfin bream, whiting, tailor and hopefully even jewfish.

“Plenty of fish available at present but it's the size that is the problem as most caught are seemingly still in their primary school stage,” he said “The inlet is absolutely chock a block full of bait throughout most the bays which could be the bigger problem, as the pantry is way too full. Making knowing which is the right place to be at the right time is a Rubik’s Cube. Temperature has crept up to 16 degrees, which means the big girls should start waking up soon, and hopefully the bigger tailor, or as we like to call them ‘the mobile burley machine’, will move back in and help stir everything up, making the other species wanting to feed!” Also a reminder the bass and estuary perch closure is over and young Georgia Poyner went to her secret spot to take advantage.
Graham from Tackleworld Moruya reports Pro Staff member Nathan enjoyed a great day’s fishing catching and releasing some really nice bream and flathead out of Moruya River. Nathan’s choice of lure was the Jackson Athlete and Komachi’s. The luderick are still on the chew around the hole in the wall as well as the breakwall.
“If it’s trevally and tailor that you’re chasing they are still in the main channel around Preddies Wharf – try using small Arma Anchovie metal slices – great fun on bream gear! Up river bass are being caught in the ‘fresh’ using Squidgy soft plastic Prawns.”
At Tuross, bream are being pulled out of the oyster leases as well as around the islands, with perch being caught further up river above the Four Ways. Try using deeper diving Daiwa Presso’s and cast hard up into the snags. Small jewies are also being caught up around the rock wall at the entrance to bumbo using Squidgy soft plastics.
On the rocks and beaches, Graham reports salmon, bream and tailor are coming in off most beaches from Broulee to Potato Point with some great gutters forming off many of the beaches. Try using a Paternoster style rig with a surf popper on the top as a teaser and ganged pilchards on the bottom. Offshore has been mostly quiet for the last week with snapper, mowies and gummies in 70 metres of water.
Bermi Bait and Tackle meanwhile posted that a couple of locals took advantage of the strong westerlies and scored themselves a feed of black drummer. “These fish fight as hard as anything for their size and can be caught along most of our coastline when the weather allows. Fresh cunji and nippers are amongst the better baits however you'll catch them on prawns and squid at times too.”
NSGFC Report – Now that the weather is improving and the seas are getting calmer, some of the guys from Narooma Sport and Gamefishing Club travelled north to the reefs off Tuross Heads during the week. They mainly caught snapper with the occasional morwong and pigfish. Squid was the best bait, small sinkers and light leaders in about 60 meters of water was found to be the best method. Pictured is Lou Moore and some nice snapper. I would like on behalf of the club to welcome all the new members who have signed up over the last 12 months and hope to see many of you over the year and a lot of true and maybe not so true fish stories.
