The key theme the owners of 10 Paterson Road in Coalcliff had when they approached Realize Architecture in 2004 was it had to “make a statement”.
Principal of the Helensburgh firm Terry Savill said there were many features he was proud of in the five-bedroom, three-bathroom home he designed around 10 years ago.
“It was part of the gentrification of Paterson Avenue,” Mr Savill said.
“They knew they had a special site and wanted to take into account the spectacular views.”
Imagine walking out of your kitchen for your morning coffee to views as far north as Kurnell.
Or hosting a new year’s eve barbeque with views of the midnight fireworks over Wollongong harbour.
Teak decking and open timbers were used to inspire a strong nautical feel and all finished “like a ship’s deck where it’s corked”.
Mr Savill said the choice to use the more expensive teak instead of the standard Australia hardwood paid off with a “fantastic” appearance.
“The use of materials has just enhanced the general [appearance] with the use of stone in the stairs and in the kitchen, the teak timber and the outside decking.
“Outside there’s matching timber as screens and sensors throughout the place, so it’s got quite a harmonising effect.
“It’s open but private.”
Meanwhile the giant windows and steel beams have been able retain their shininess from self cleaning glass and metal treatments.
The property, which used as a holiday home, was a challenge for its designers as the land is environmentally zoned and came with a number of harsh restrictions.
There had to be a three metre gap between either side of the new house and the neighbours, the amount of physical floor space the house could occupy was less that normal, as well as rules over how far back it had to sit from the ocean.
Large outdoor spaces were used on every level to combat this, as does the steel structure which still allows space between the neighbouring properties.
The 550 square metre property will go to auction on October 8, 12:30pm.
