Corrimal Chamber of Commerce president Paul Boultwood said the posthumous citizenship award was designed as tribute to the lasting impression Mr Organ – a Woonona resident who died last month after a long battle with cancer – left on the community.
Bulli-born Olympian, rugby sevens gold medallist Nicole Beck, was also a prominent part of this year’s event – leading the popular street parade through the town.
“We wanted to give a proper home welcome for our Olympian” Mr Boultwood said.
The annual spring festival once again attracted thousands of people to the northern Illawarra town, with organisers estimating 50,000 people had attended by 1pm.
Since starting as a car boot sale in 1981, the festival has grown to become the largest free, one-day festival in regional NSW.
