He's responsible for one of the biggest earworms in living memory, so it's probably a relief to read the following: James Blunt is retiring from songwriting.
The You're Beautiful singer's announcement has sparked amusement online, where witty Tweeters could barely contain their enthusiasm.
"In more shocking news, James Blunt was still IN the music making bizz," said one.
"Maybe 2012 isn't the year of the apocalypse after all," wrote another.
Blunt, whose morose tunes sparked several parodies, told Britain's Daily Mail that he wanted "to take some time out for myself".
"I haven't got any plans to do more songwriting," he said in an interview at the launch of a London nightclub. "I have been chilling out since I finished my world tour."
Blunt's first song, You're Beautiful, spent weeks at the top of Australian charts after its release in 2005 and ranked 11th in the end-of year charts.
It has remained in the consciousness in album compilations for romance and housework — and on radio.
The witty goodbyes, such as "James Blunt has announced he is quitting music. This is devastating news for both of his fans", are sure to continue, but Blunt surely has the last laugh.
"I've spent a lot of time in Ibiza, where I have a villa."
The singer's fans (there's sure to be some) will be in Some Kind of Trouble at the news. Goodbye, My Lover.
