Lake Illawarra police have now confirmed two cars were involved in a fatal accident at Windang on Wednesday.
Police believe that a silver Holden Commodore and a white Toyota were travelling southbound on Windang Road when they collided around 12:30pm.
The Commodore then slammed into a parked truck near Port Kembla Golf Club, killing the 18-year-old male driver on impact.
The truck driver was making deliveries to the golf driving range and was uninjured.
The 19-year-old male driver of the Toyota was taken to Shellharbour Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
A number of people saw the incident unfold and tried to help the driver of the Holden without success.
NSW Ambulance Station Officer for Wollongong Anton Jamsek said two witnesses were assessed by paramedics for shock.
Windang resident Melissa Woodford Barreda heard the accident while watching television.
“The car hit pretty hard. I heard it from my bedroom with the TV on and ran out. Smoke everywhere,” she posted on the Illawarra Mercury Facebook page.
“[It was] outside the driving range/putt putt. The truck was stationary.”
Lisa Walsh was driving on the opposite side of the road heading northbound at the time.
She said she pulled over as soon as it happened and called triple zero.
All three southbound lanes were closed for at least an hour while police investigated.
Traffic remains heavy in both directions and motorists are being advised to avoid the area and use the M1.
Route 37, 51, 53 and 57 buses are delayed.
