The Hawks officially announced Martin would be the club’s 1th captain in a partnership with Forman for the 2016-17 season.
Martin, who has been with the Hawks since 2008, was honoured.
“After 8 years playing for the club it feels only natural to progress into this leadership role alongside Oscar," he said.
“I’m very grateful of [coach Rob Beveridge] and the Hawks for their support and look forward to embracing this prestigious role."
With an extensive history at the Hawks and in the NBL, Hawks coach Rob Beveridge felt Martin was good fit to take up a leadership role.
“This will be Rhys’ 9th year at the club where he has proudly played over 200 games. Rhys has really matured as a person and has developed some excellent leadership skills on and off the court,” he said.
“I look forward to having Rhys take more ownership of the team and having a larger role with the club.”
Martin’s first assignment as co-captain comes later this week when the Hawks play Cairns Taipans in a two-game series.
The first match will be played in Cairns on Friday.
Illawarra have already played five preseason matches heading into the NBL campaign which begins on October 6.
They lost a series in Darwin against Adelaide 36ers 2-1 before sharing a two-game series against rivals the Sydney Kings.
