While their attack came up trumps for them at the death, skipper Tyrone McCarthy – who was close to best on ground for the Cutters – praised his side’s defence which absorbed a first half onslaught from the Jets.
“I think for most teams that’s the area they want to be the best at and it’s something JD talks about, being united in our d and thankfully we kept them out enough [on Sunday],” McCarthy said.
“We set [the grand final] as our goal at the beginning of the year and you can see by the boys reaction to those tries we scored just how much it meant to us.
“We made it tough on ourselves but I’m really proud of the effort hanging in there. We knew it was going to be an 80-minute effort and Newtown gave us that.”
