Warrawong man elects to do MERIT drug course

A heavily intoxicated Warrawong man who bit his mother on the arm then chased her around a car and grabbed her by the throat when she refused to take him to the pub has been placed in a court-ordered 12-week drug treatment course.

Tuhirangi Raymond Wait was assessed as suitable to undergo the Magistrate’s early referral into treatment course, known as MERIT, during a brief mention of his matter in Wollongong court on Tuesday.

Wait damaged his mother’s car then punched and bit her when she refused to take him to the Port Kembla Hotel after picking him up from a friend’s house one Friday night in August.

A witness phone police and Wait was arrested on the spot. He was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and property damage.

The case will return to court on November 1.
