Keeping healthy is about good mental health as much as physical health, and a mental health month expo in Wollongong tomorrow will put the spotlight on this growing issue.
Expo in the Mall, co-ordinated by Illawarra Shoalhaven Medicare Local, will take over the amphitheatre in Crown St Mall on Thursday to encourage good mental health and raise awareness of the resources available for those in need.
Mental health services and carer and consumer organisations will be on hand to provide a range of services and information to the public, with activities, music and other entertainment throughout the day.
Mental health nurse Kim Capp said the prevalence of mental health problems in the community meant roughly one in five people have or will suffer from a mental health issue.
This means almost every family will be affected at some time.
‘‘The expo will provide information on all sorts of areas of mental health and will also be an opportunity to celebrate the positives,’’ Ms Capp said.
Members of the community are encouraged to drop in to the free event and ‘‘have a chat with people who can help’’.
The expo will run from 9.30am to 3pm.
