Art4Refugees Junior will run in conjunction with SCARF’s annual Arts4Refugees charity art event.
Now in its eighth year, 100 per cent of proceeds from the sale of donated artworks will be utilised by SCARF’s programs to support refugee children, youth, and adults in the community.
But before the main event officially kicks off next week, the inaugural Art4Refugees Junior showcase will take centre stage at The Illawarra Grammar School (TIGS) this Saturday and Sunday.
The event sources and exhibits student artworks carrying the themes ‘Seeking home’ and ‘Building a sense of belonging’.
Cultural performances, live music and various activities and workshops will also feature at TIGS on October 1-2 from 10am.
SCARF executive officer Sherryl Reddy said Art4Refugees Junior aims to build understanding of the refugee experience among young people in our community and recognise the resilience, strength and positive contribution that people from refugee backgrounds bring to the country and community.
The event supplements the Art4Refugees Main Exhibition which officially opens with a vibrant and multi-cultural event on Friday, October 7 from 6pm at the Project Contemporary Artspace in Wollongong.
Celebrations will include musical performances, Syrian food, guest speakers from refugee backgrounds, acclaimed artist and film-maker, George Gittoes and Archibald Prize finalist, Blak Douglas.
Attendees will also have the exclusive opportunity of first selection of artwork for purchase on the night. These artworks will be exhibited at Project until October 16, with additional artworks to be displayed at Wollongong Art Gallery from October 12-30.
Ms Reddy was excited to see the local community come together for this series of art and cultural events.
“Art4Refugees is SCARF’s annual major fundraiser. Alongside raising funds, we hope to offer a range of opportunities for the Illawarra community to get involved over the month of October,’’ she said.
