Original plans submitted to Wollongong City Council in May included the removal of the steeple altogether, as it was identified as being in poor condition and in need of work because it is unsafe.
However, council officers recommended the steeple be repaired or replaced with “a structure of similar height and pitch, maintaining the original streetscape impressions from the design” due to its heritage significance.
A new report lodged this month reveals the church now plans to demolish the old steeple and build a “more delicate” structure, which a heritage consultant said would “present as a more contemporary and refined interpretation of the previous steeple”.
The amended plans are on display until October 19.
