NEC’s $25 million Customer Service Management Centre (CSMC), at the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus, will provide 24/7 technical support to thousands of customers across the state.
The company is also responsible for spearheading the modernisation of state government agency Transport for NSW’s IT network.
Parliamentary secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward said NEC managing the Transport for NSW network was “a great leap forward” and would ensure staff could “get on with the job of delivering vital infrastructure projects and public transport services for customers”.
Transport for NSW’s 25,000 staff currently work from hundreds of locations across NSW and the government wants those operations be more efficient and more cost-effective, Mr Ward said.
The transformation of the IT network is part of the agency’s next generation infrastructure services (NGIS) program, which includes a shift to new cloud-based collaboration services and more mobile tools for staff, such as laptops and iPads.
“A key component of the NGIS program is the outsourcing of services to NEC Australia in Wollongong,” Mr Ward said. “This is a really exciting time to be part of the IT industry and the Illawarra is right at the forefront of innovation and advancement in this field.”
NEC’s new Wollongong centre supplements its existing operations in Adelaide.
“These are long-term IT jobs, which help push that diversification of our economy in a variety of different ways,” Mr Ward said.
“This [CSMC] could have gone anywhere in the state but it’s coming to our region.”
NSW Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres will join special guests for the official opening, to be held at 2pm on Wednesday.
