Australia was one of the largest consumers of asbestos-containing materials in the world so the deadly fibre is not only found in fibro homes.
It can be found in one in three brick, weatherboard, fibro or clad homes built before 1987.
It can also be found under carpets, behind walls, in cement floors, in garages and around hot water pipes.
If the materials are disturbed they can release fibres that can be inhaled which may cause asbestos-related diseases including malignant mesothelioma.
