“A bit like reading a comic, a bit like going to see a band, a bit like listening to a podcast” – that’s how producer Gabriel Clark describes the innovative new performance Blue – Live.

It’s a live reading by Austinmer artist Pat Grant of his acclaimed graphic novel Blue, with the book projected on a big screen and sounds performed by top local musicians, including Russell Webster (Shining Bird), Matthew Steffen (Decoder Ring), Zachary Armitage (Ya-Aha) and Carlos Adura (Strides).
Produced by Austinmer photographer Christopher Frape and Stanwell Park’s Clark, Blue – Live was commissioned by the Yours and Owls group to be part of the fringe festival leading up to this weekend’s main event.
Clark was a founder of the Radio With Pictures audio-visual storytelling series at the Opera House in Sydney.
“It is a story about three kids growing up in Bolton, a coastal town somewhere north of Wollongong and south of Sydney,” the Blue – Live producers say in their statement.
“Bolton is quiet - the sort of place where one might spend an idyllic childhood - but as the story opens things are about to change.
“Strange blue-skinned foreigners have started landing on the beaches in strange home-made boats.
“This is an uncomfortable story about childhood, racism and what it means to be Australian.”
The show is not recommended for children.
Blue – Live is on at the Wollongong arts precinct, near the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, at 7pm Thursday. Tickets $29.60 through Moshtix or buy them at the door.
