Mohamad Omar, 39, was charged with two counts of intentionally choking and one count each of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm over the April 6 incident, which left his partner bloodied and bruised.

Court documents said Omar and the woman had been in a relationship for about four years however were estranged at the time, with the woman staying at her mother’s house in Fairfield.

Police allege Omar turned up at his in-law’s house around 3pm wanting to speak with his partner and asking her to go with him to his house in Helensburgh.

They arrived around 8pm however began arguing almost immediately over Omar owning more than one mobile phone SIM card.

The argument soon turned physical, with Omar allegedly grabbing the woman around the neck and trying to choke her.

Police claim he eventually let her go, only to again try to choke her a short time later. She told police she lost consciousness almost immediately the second time.

When she later woke, she was covered in blood from a wound to her forehead and had a chipped tooth.

Omar drove her to hospital, dropping her off at the front door before leaving straight away.

The woman required 15 stitches to close her head wound.

Omar handed himself into police a week later.

He had been due to face court on Wednesday but did not turn up, prompting Magistrate Mark Douglass to issue the arrest warrant.
