Northern Districts, who took out the competition last year, scored a modest 7/128 against Corrimal but were able to keep the Cougars to just 88.
In the other pool A game, Dapto were able to defend their total of 7/149 at home to Wollongong.
Wollongong had 4/134 in reply.
In pool B, a Matthew Scavarelli hundred wasn’t enough for Keira to hold off Wests Illawarra.
Guided by Scavarelli’s 103, Keira posted 3/143 but Wests chased it down with seven balls to spare and seven wickets in hand.
University couldn’t be denied by Balgownie as the Students beat their rivals total of 109 with 14 balls to spare at Judy Masters Oval.
Helensburgh beat Port Kembla at King George Oval to round out the opening fixtures to the new season.
