3.30pm: Police say the driver of a truck that caught fire on Picton Road on Monday afternoon escaped the inferno unscathed.
Chief Inspector Jeanette Jenkins from Camden police said the open-sided truck and trailer, with “bedding and cotton materials” on board, was travelling west when the fire broke out about 12.20pm.
Chief Insp Jenkins said the male driver spotted smoke coming from the rear trailer.
“He’s pulled to the side of the road, at which time he’s realised the load’s been engulfed in fire,” she said.
“He’s exited the truck and called emergency services.”
The truck was destroyed, but the driver escaped uninjured.
Picton Road remains closed between Macarthur Drive and Wilton Road.
All vehicles (except B-doubles) should use Almond Street, Argyle Street, Wilton Road and Macarthur Drive in both directions.
B-doubles are being allowed to pass under stop/slow conditions.
2.50pm: Picton Road between Macarthur Drive and Wilton Road remains closed after a truck fire earlier on Monday.
NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the accident site, but weren’t required to treat anybody.
1.05pm: A truck fire has closed Picton Road in both directions near Wilton.
Eastbound motorists are being diverted into Almond Street, Wilton Road and Macarthur Drive.
Westbound motorists are being diverted into Macarthur Drive, Wilton Road and Almond Street.
The diversion is not suitable for B-doubles, which are advised to use Appin Road instead.
The NSW Transport Management Centre reports traffic is heavy in the area.
Motorists are advised to allow additional travel time and expect delays.
12.40pm: A truck fire is affecting traffic in both directions on Picton Road near Wilton.
Fire crews are working to extinguish the truck, which caught alight between Macarthur Drive and Wilton Road about 12.30pm.
There are reports the road has been closed, although the NSW Transport Management Centre says traffic is affected in both directions and drivers should exercise caution.
