More than 500 competitors filled the Melbourne Showgrounds from October 6 to 8 in a bid to represent the best in their trade, and their country, at next year’s global competition in Abu Dhabi.
Brett McPaul of Albion Park won gold for Construction Steel Work after training for a solid 10 months.
Timothy Mitchell from North Wollongong and William Storm from Windang also picked up gold for the Engineering Team Challenge.
Bronze went to fitter Jake Cunningham of Corrimal and turner Zak Anderson of Kiama.
The group will have to wait until early next year to learn if they’ve also been selected for the Australian squad of 25 to 30 to head to the middle east in 2017.
Meantime TAFE Illawarra received the most gold medals out of any region with a total of six (including students Wagga Wagga, Mittagong and Londonerry).
