The Illawarra Connection staged a special event to honour the region’s Olympians on Tuesday at the Novotel. TIC president Roger Summerill introduced Illawarra Olympic Committee chair Gareth McKeen who called on seven Rio Olympians present to help unveil the 2016 Rio Tile for the Illawarra Olympic Tribute Wall in Lang Park. That was followed by panel discussion. Mr Summerill said the invitation to Olympians was made possible by CBA.

David Morgan Williams, the former chair of the committee responsible for constructing the wall was present. Athletes who represented the region in Rio were Aaron Royle, Blake Govers, Caitlin Foord, Casey Sablowski, David McKeon, Emma McKeon, Emma Tonegato, Grace Stewart, Jarrod Poort, Madeline Hills, Michelle Heyman, Nicole Beck, Ryan Bailie, Ryan Gregson, Shane Rose and Sue Hearn. Mr McKeen and committee members Rosita O’Keefe, Stephen Wooldridge, Tim Berry, Ben Pike, Walter Immoos, Simon Kersten, Warwick Shanks, John Brannon, Sue Baker-Finch and Rebecca Armstrong struggled to organise a fundraiser to help send the region’s Olympians to Rio this year. “Part of the motivation tonight is to encourage business leaders that in four years time when we come knocking again that you will put your hands in your pocket to support it”.
