CityServe is an initiative of the Christian Churches of Shellharbour City.
It is a collaboration of the churches, Shellharbour City Council, businesses and community volunteers.
Past projects have included revitalising public places such as Warilla Pool.
CityServe Shellharbour volunteers converged on Lake Illawarra High School on Saturday to build a bespoke outdoor learning facility specifically for students with special needs.
“Shane (Cook, CityServe Shellharbour pastor) contacted us and asked if there was anything CityServe could do to help this school out,” principal Tony Hicks said.
“There was one project that really stuck out, and that was to revitalise this area that has laid dormant and wasted for ten or so years.”
Project manager Dean Piccirillo estimated 100-150 people would volunteer their time to help with painting, gardening and developing the outdoor learning space throughout the day.
“When we turn up on the day, we just have faith that we’re going to have enough volunteers come and volunteer their time,” he said. “All bar one of our previous projects have been in conjunction with Shellharbour council… Today is our biggest project we’ve taken on completely on our own behalf.”
