Virgin Australia and Tigerair passengers can no longer carry the smartphone on flights from Sunday, October 16.

Samsung Electronics announced a global recall of the devices last month  after reports faulty batteries were overheating and catching fire.

On Monday, the South Korean tech giant suspended production of the Note7 after news that three of the replacement devices had caught fire in the US.

The Qantas' Group had earlier allowed the Note7 on board, provided it was switched off. But from 12.01am on Sunday, October 16, customers will be banned from bringing the devices on all flights.

A report on the Qantas' website stated the measure was taken due to concerns regarding potential fire risk from the device's battery after a number of incidents worldwide and follows a ban put in place by regulators overseas.

"The ban applies to devices being carried onto the aircraft, in carry-on baggage as well as check in luggage," it read.

"Other Samsung devices are not affected."

Virgin Australia and Tigerair have also followed, citing fire risks. Both the airlines had prohibited the use of the device in their aircraft. However, a total ban will now apply on carrying the smartphone in person, in carry-on luggage, or in a checked-in bag.

This comes after the US Department of Transportation banned all Note7 on flights to, from, or within the United States. They also banned shipping the smartphone in air cargo.

Earlier this month, there were reports that the device started smoking inside a US plane.

Samsung's exploding Galaxy Note7 was one of the products to win consumer group Choice's Shonky Award for "worst of the worst" products this year.
