It seems we are starting to see some progress around the backdrop of our city in Mount Keira.
For too long the view that overlooks the city of Wollongong has sat under utilised.
Now we have some movement.
The Monday edition of the Illawarra Mercury revealed the council has called for tenders to operate a kiosk facility atop of Mount Keira.
It is hoped it will be up and running before Christmas and those soaking in one of the best views of our beautiful region will be able to further enjoy the experience.
This is progress. Finally.
For the first time in years it seems some headway is being made and the Wollongong City Council should be congratulated for making the development of the city’s jewel a priority.
This is the first step of fulfilling the enormous potential Mount Keira has and further unlocking more tourism for a region fulfilling its promise.
This weekend that tourism potential itself takes another leap forward.
The first cruise ship to dock in Wollongong will pull into Port Kembla.
Once docked the Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas will allow 2400 passengers to disembark to experience the tourism delights of the Illawarra.
A portion of those tourists will jump on board a bus as part of a pre-packaged tour and head up to Mount Keira.
In fact, for locals Mount Keira will be one of the best spots to witness the arrival of the Radiance of the Seas and its docking in Port Kembla.
You will see the Radiance of the Seas arrive and sail a little north of the city from about 6 am on Sunday morning. The pilot, who will guide the cruise liner into the harbour, will then be ferried out to board Radiance.
The Rotary Club of Wollongong – which has long maintained the Mount Keira summit off its own back for many years _ and Greenacres will be filling the void again on Sunday.
The two local organisations will be partnering to ensure locals or visitors who attend the summit on Sunday morning and throughout the day can be fed and access a coffee. If you haven’t been to the Mount Keira summit or been in a while, here is a perfect opportunity.
