After coming into the squad midway through last year’s Big Bash League, McAndrew played in the semi-final on the Sydney Thunder’s way to victory.
He had played a cameo role in ending the ongoing jokes about the Thunder’s years of failure since the national Twenty20 competition began.
McAndrew’s career has taken him to New Zealand and Canberra, as well as winning a one-day final with Sydney grade powerhouse Bankstown last season.
The 23-year old made his debut at the SCG in front of 38,456 against Sydney rivals the Sixers, before also playing in the semi-final at the Adelaide Oval.
“Coming into the squad last year, half way through was a brilliant opportunity for me, after spending the pre-season with the Thunder Academy,” right-arm quick Nathan McAndrew said.
“Playing the two games was a dream come true and I’m looking forward to joining up with the squad again and trying to learn as much as possible throughout the season. I’d never been part of any NSW development squad at age group level.
“So it was a brilliant opportunity for me to test my skills and learn some new plans that I wouldn’t have thought about for my T20 game.”
McAndrew’s elevation to a full contract with the Thunder comes as Wollongong’s Stef Daffara returns to the franchise for the Women’s Big Bash League this season.
Thunder coach Mike Hussey expects McAndrew to play a key role.
“Nathan showed real composure during the two games he played,” Hussey said.
“Hopefully training alongside the likes of Shane Watson and Clint McKay will further help him as he looks to challenge for a place in Thunder’s side this season.”
