Lost Wollongong is looking for anyone who fancies themselves a bit of a historical sleuth.
The online site's Facebook page includes a photo gallery tagged “Can you Help?”
It includes photos found in an old frame, among the belongings of a deceased loved one, bought in a garage sale or found in a box when moving house.
The one thing they have in common is they all include a mystery – the location is unknown or maybe it’s the names of those in the photo.
“Some photos over the years people have managed to identify what it is and we’ve managed to put some information with the photo,” said one of Lost Wollongong’s founders David Bottin.
“But there are a lot of photos even now that we don’t know what the history of it is and that’s what we’d like to find out.”
Getting information about the found photos could also be the first step in returning them to the rightful owners.
Mr Bottin said the group has had some luck identifying images but others have been really tricky.
“Some of the photos, it’s very hard to pick what they are,” he said.
“The only thing we know is that it’s from the Illawarra but trying to put the story to it isn’t the easiest thing.”
