Illawarra’s women’s team were dominant throughout the tournament and went on to claim a maiden title with a 4-0 win over Northern Nations in the decider.
Bungarra’s player Shakiah Tungai won the Kyah Simon award as the leading player of the tournament and Tenaya Davis won man of the match in the final. Both players are considered chances to be selected in the indigenous team when the team is announced on Wednesday.
They helped Illawarra to an unbeaten record over the championships.
The Bungarra’s conceded just one goal at the tournament.
Illawarra coach Macca Davis hailed the event as a success.
“It was a good hard competition and was great for Illawarra soccer,” he said.
“All the team we had were all local players who were all indigenous other than the two non-indigenous. We had representatives from Oak Flats, Albion Park, Tarrawanna, Thirroul so there was a number of teams represented.
“It was a good tournament that was put together well by Bernie McLeod from Nowra and Lawrence Gilbert.”
Illawarra’s men’s team didn’t fare as strongly and failed to make the finals.
SE QLD Dingoes defeated Eora United 2-1 in the Men’s Division.
The championships will be held in Nowra again next year.
