Amongst the five million users of website FetLife, dubbed as "Like Facebook but run by kinksters", were men wanting to replicate his lifestyle and women, called his "maidens", who wanted to be with him.

He published a book of his supposed sexual exploits with people he met online and in 2015 a festival was held in the US dedicated to "Wolf--king:

But only now, after The Wolf was charged with sexual assault by the NSW police, are those who encountered him learning who really he is.

Liam Gordon Murphy, 41, will appear in court next month charged with raping a woman in a Kings Cross hotel that he had met via FetLife in August 2015 .

He was arrested last month at his Little Bay home with police seizing several computers from the Dwyer Avenue home.  Detectives have not ruled out further charges being laid and say their investigation is ongoing.

Mr Murphy's FetLife profile is not longer active and his self-published 140-page book, Show Me Who You Really Are, written under The Wolf pseudonym and sold via Amazon is no longer available online.

Those who encountered Mr Murphy in real life say he worked hard to keep his identity secret, even with the women he was seeing.

"He kept his identify very well hidden from everyone who met him, never inviting anyone to his residence, being careful not to divulge his full name, only gave very vague details about his work," one person told Fairfax Media.

A woman, who says she was at one time part of the Wolf's "exclusive crew", posted on FetLife that she and two others who had regularly encountered him had met up and had no idea who he was.

"We pieced together what we knew of this man, and realised it was next to nothing," she wrote in a post on the website. "Yes, we all knew his first name. Only one of us actually knew his last name, because he'd let it slip when booking a hotel room. Yes, we all knew what suburb he lived in, but no, no one had ever been to his house. What was he hiding? ... I still don't know."

"Yes, we all had his number ... but it was a [FetLife]-specific phone number, not his vanilla number. Left in a situation where he'd taken the SIM out, all three of us realised that we had absolutely no way of contacting him, and no way of knowing the real him. It didn't stop all three of us from rekindling a friendship with him when he came back, of course, we were all under his spell."

Mr Murphy was granted police bail after being charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault and attempted aggravated sexual assault.

His bail conditions include that he not access FetLife and he will appear at Downing Centre Local Court on December 6.
